1. The primary reason you are going to become an affiliate marketer is for the money, so when you choose a program you need to look at the money. A standard pay for an affiliate marketer is anywhere from 5%-30% depending on the company and product being sold.
When deciding if an affiliate program will pay you enough you need to do some calculations. Figure out how much you will make on each product and then make a low guess of how many of that product you can sell. If you think the amount you get is enough become an affiliate, if not then do not.

2. Look at how you will be earning your commission. There are two forms: single and recurring commissions. Single commissions are the most common. You are paid a single commission on a product you sell, so if you sell an eBook you earn the commission on that book and then nothing else.

Recurring commissions are a little less common. A recurring commission is when you sell a product or service that involves recurring fees, such as monthly subscriptions. One common form of this is an autoresponder.

3. Next, look at the type of commission levels the affiliate program offers. A program that goes one or two-tiers deep tends to be the best. One-tier means you earn commission on your sales only and two-tier means you earn your commission plus a commission on anyone you refer.

4. How the affiliate website you will be promoting looks is extremely important. The website should look professional so people are more likely to buy from you. If the website does not look good you will lose customers. Also, look to see how easily accessible the site is. You should be able to clearly find all the links and customer service information.

Along the same line as how the website looks is what they offer you to promote the website. Affiliate programs need to offer you materials that will help you promote the site, such as: banners, email letters, follow up emails, and bonuses.
